The area is 14,000,000 km2, that makes it the 5th largest continent. It is larger than Europe.




Some countries claim pieces of Antarctica like pieces of cake.




It is not allowed to have military bases in Antarctica only scientific research.













Its very cold, it can be down to -82 degrees c.






The average temperature of the interior is around −57°C.


Although it is full of ice it is considered as a desert because there is very little rain or snowfall.




There are penguins BUT NO polar bears.

An iceberg is a very large piece of ice that floats in the sea. Most of an iceberg is below the surface of the water.




When an iceberg gets broken of from a glacier it is called calving. The largest iceberg calved from Antarctica was larger than Belgium.



Visiting Antarctica


Tourist travel to Antarctica can be done in 3 ways:

  1. cruise ships with shore visits (by far the most popular).

  2. specially organized land expeditions.

  3. sightseeing by air.


You'll need warm clothing: boots, hoods, glove, water repellent pants, parka and warm underwear.


In Antarctica its summer when it is winter in Europe. During summer it is sunshine 24 hours a day.


There are no hotels on the continent. Most visitors sleep on board their boat, although land expeditions will use tents for shelter.
